WRITING FOR SOCIAL CHANGE
“What keeps us from writing to make a difference?” This course prepares students to answer that question and explore writing as both a tool for uncovering social justice issues and a way to advocate for change. Students develop their own voices as public writers through blogging and local public writing projects. Engaging inlocal art and oral history projects also brings students to discover how (and whose) stories come to matter in Louisville.
Because stories are not bound to the page, this course teaches students how to use visual, sonic, and other digital tools to compose stories that capture the attention of local audiences. More specifically, students learn how their medium of composition changes their message, telling the same story in different ways to different audiences through different digital mediums.
Most recently, students in this course take the case study of environmental injustice in Louisville, Kentucky, creating photo essays, podcasts, and videos of important locations, individuals, and phenomena related to air pollution around Rubbertown.
